Chinese Translations of Church Names in Macao （16-20" Centuries）： Features and Social Influences

Abstract

本文通過考察16至20世纪期同澳門教堂名稱的漢課，描寫並總結澳門教登名稱的漢課特色，認為澳門教堂名稱 漢譯經歷了從譯語文化取向到源語文化取向再到兩種文化稱謂共存的發展歷程。在此基礎上，本文從話語與社會愛遷的角度討論了澳鬥教堂名稱漢譯與澳門社會文化發展之間的關係，尤其是漢譯名所折射出的社會影響。

Through the investigation of the Chinese translations of church names in Macao during 16th to 20th century, this paper has summarized the characteristics of Macao's church name translation, which have evolved from target-culture-oriented to source-culture-oriented, and eventually to the coexistence of the two distinct cultural orientations. Based on the findings, the paper explores the relationships between Macao's church name translation and Macao's socio-cultural development from the perspective of discourse and social change (Fairclough 1992),  in particular the social influences as reflected by the Chinese translations of the church names.
